Host & Stay | Thimble Cottage
Entire home in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
The space
Pre-dating the 17th century, this mid-terrace holiday home is grade II listed and likely to have been a former doctor’s residence. Quirky and characterful, the property is set over three floors and sleeps up to four guests.Upon entering Thimble Cottage, you’ll be welcomed into the open plan living, dining and kitchen area. Featuring low beamed ceilings, a large Georgian window and a rustic brick statement fireplace, this cosy space has a traditional cottage feel. The kitchen is fully equipped so you can make the most of your self-catering stay. Unwind with your loved ones on the grey sofas or enjoy meals together in the dining area.
A winding staircase takes you up to the first floor where you’ll find the master bedroom and family bathroom. The double bedroom has an exposed sandstone feature wall with two double sash windows letting in plenty of light and fresh sea air. Pops of ochre are added in the soft furnishings to create a cohesive look and a truly relaxing feel.
The family bathroom features tasteful white metro tiles and exposed beams. The space is complete with a WC, basin and a modern shower enclosure including an invigorating power shower.
Take the winding staircase up to the second floor and you’ll discover the expansive twin bedroom. Nautically themed, there are hues of blue with the quirky shaped chimney breast strikingly painted in Cook’s Blue. Take a seat at the elevated front window, the perfect vantage point to observe the mast tips of the Endeavour sailing vessel moored in the harbour.
Guest access
Guests have access to the full cottage. The keys to Thimble Cottage are accessed via a secure key safe and full details will be provided shortly before your arrival date.
We provide a parking scratch card for your stay which gives you free parking in the W zones.

The all night disco, the front door falling off, the lack of customer service from Hist and statmy, absolutely shambolic.

There was supposed to be a parking scratch card to allow for free parking which we couldn’t find, so we ended up paying for 2 days parking

The property was clean from inside and had a well equipped kitchen.
The staff is extremely unresponsive and irresponsible. It has been 14 days since I submitted a complaint form. There is radio silence from Host and Stay and there has been no attempt to resolve the issue.
I had booked Thimble Cottage for 2 nights, 26-28 June. I had planned to pay the damage cover upon my arrival at the property as it is an unusual charge that has never been requested at any other property. Booking.com also flags external links in the app’s chat window to make the customer wary of phishing attacks through external links. It was natural on my part to wait till I get to the property and pay any legitimate damage covers there and then. I did not receive any check in details up until the check in time.
After arriving at the property at sharp 4 pm on 26 June, I tried to contact Host & Stay via call, messages and email multiple times. Calls didn’t go through because the line was “busy” till 7:30 pm. I left multiple voice messages too after the beep. Most importantly, the link to make the damage cover payment was REMOVED from the booking chat.
We did not have any code for unlocking the property key. After being stranded for 3 hours outside the door of the property, not being able to establish contact with anyone at Host and Stay, we were forced to book another place at expensive rates (£218/night) as we didn’t have a place to stay and this was the only place available. We made multiple calls and sent numerous messages to you throughout this whole process. We had luggage with us, were on the street for 3 hours, and had to forcefully book an expensive place last minute and had to spend further on the commute. This shook our trip’s budget and cause a lot of distress.
The customer support staff from Host & Stay got in touch with us around 7:30 pm on 26 July and admitted that the link yo pay the damage cover was removed and was a fault on your end. We told them that we would be checking in on 27 July till 28 July.

Whitby is beautiful place, with great cultural and natural features. The accommodation was right in the heart of the town, so we could walk everywhere. The cottage is very clean, tidy, and well set up. Other accommodations are quite near, so you will hear some noise from the street or lane outside. This didn't interfere with our enjoyment or stay.
We had no hot water for our final two days, it just stopped, cold showers for rest of our break. This wasn't ideal, but what can you do - as we were up and out early each morning.

Very steep stairs leading to the bedrooms, we could have been informed prior to arrival where the parking bays were, as we paid in advance for parking then when we got to the cottage there was permits to park for free, but only in certain streets

Very cute little place - a little smaller downstairs than expected but the photos were entirely accurate…and the bedrooms and the bathroom were lovely. The mock log burner added a cosy vibe downstairs which we enjoyed. The co-op was very close which was fab! We had a lovely time :)

The cottage is very central with parking close by at £9 for 24 hours. We enjoyed a nice meal at the moon and sixpence, very reasonably priced. The cottage its self is down a dirty alley way which is used by people leaving the pub at all hours and as the cottage has single glazed windows the noise was a problem late at night. After booking the cottage I was then asked to pay a fee for a damage waiver of £25, this should just be within the price. The £60 cleaning fee is a little steep as the cottage is that tiny it could be cleaned top to bottom within an hour. The cleaners obviously don’t check the crockery or utensils as some of the cups had sugar in and the plates were left with grease marks. As a host myself all drawers and cupboards are checked and everything washed ready for the next guests. The batteries in the remote needed replacing too. Little problems that are easily resolved with more care and attention to detail.

The location is superb and paying for parking at the station is well worth doing.
The property redefines the word 'cosy'. The ground floor is very, very, very small. With two small children it wasn't easy.

Really lovely, cosy, little cottage. Full instructions provided, all heating/appliances easy to use (for the heated towel rail you need to press the switch outside the bathroom door and press the "boost" button). It was clean and perfect for the two of us. The Christmas decorations in the cottage were a really nice touch as well. Bed and pillows really comfy. Great central location. We didn't use the car once we'd parked up; all shops, pubs, restaurants are just a short walk away, plus the seafront, Abbey/steps, and pier. We used the Marina car-park for unloading and loading, and parked about 10 mins walk away for the rest of the time. We felt really at home at Thimble Cottage and we will definitely book to stay here again. Thank you for an enjoyable stay, we loved our cosy Christmas break in Whitby.

Cute little cottage. Perfect location. Parking can be tricky. I've never had to pay a damage waiver fee for a property before and feel like this should be factored into the price of the booking rather than a separate payment afterward.

We liked the location, central to everything!!
We like how cosy and comfortable it was too.
A few to many cobwebs around and about, and the place felt damp until we worked out how to manage the electric heaters.
Didn't like being woken at 1/2am by people passing after last orders at the pubs at the end of the yard.

Very close to all local amenities and attractions etc. Really pretty little property with a nice feel to it. Super clean and comfortable! Lovely bed.
The windows seem to let in a lot of noise from the lane, so it gets a bit loud, but I suppose it that comes with a central location and historic property. There were quite a lot of automated emails during the booking process that got a bit confusing.

The property. Fantastic location, well-appointed, great character
Host and Stay, the booking agent. Excessive emails prior to stay asking for large deposit or to pay damage waiver. Messages continued even after I completed this, to the point of having to call them to check they had received my registration and ask them to stop calling. On arrival found several stains on couch, stained bedding and towels. Very disappointing especially after having been made to pay a fee for the damage deposit - I would have expected it to be immaculate. When I raised the issues, customer service told me they had ‘looked into and resolved the issue’ which was untrue since we were in the property. Emailed again and they made vague offer to ‘look into getting someone out to the property to try to remove stains’, an offer we declined since we did not wish to waste any more of our short 2 night stay responding to emails from Host&Stay. In my view they should have sent someone with clean sheets to drop off immediately. No further compensation offered. If I were the owner of the property, would move to different agent.

great central location and a lovely little cottage that was very clean and nicely decorated.
good clear communication from the management company , their links /website gave us all the information we needed.
we felt it wasn’t that clear before booking that we would be required to either pay £250 refundable bond ( minus admin fees) or take their £25 insurance . i couldn’t spare £250 to sit in their bank account leading up to christmas so had no choice but to pay their insurance. if i had seen this prior to booking , i wouldn’t have done so. i understand people need to protect their property , but i would have preferred this inso was part of the price up front, it felt underhand hiding it in the small print.
the small alley that the cottage is located in appears to also be a favourite place with local drinkers at night , so we felt a little uncomfortable coming and going at night.
whilst the company do provide a parking voucher, this is for W zones. they were too far away for our needs ( and we drove around for nearly 30 mins trying to find a space. )
it was easier and much closer to park in the main marina car park at our own expense.

awesome location and lovely little cottage
nothing about the property but careful with Host and Stay and their policies. you’re forced into taking the more expensive security deposit option as you have to beg and wait for yours to be returned. I’ve waited 15 days now and was told to e mail the company who took the deposit to find out where it is. ridiculous, it doesn’t take 15 days to check the property hasn’t been damaged and return it. meanwhile they get extra interest whilst your money sits in their account!

Thimble Cottage is beautifully maintained and such a cute place to stay right in the centre of Whitby by the harbour. We were so surprised at how close it is!
The rooms are very comfortable and the bathroom shower was incredible! The entire cottage was spotless and had everything we’d need provided.
We were also provided with 2 days worth of parking permits (kept in the welcome book), however we chose to use the 24 hour harbour car park (opposite Co-Op) for convenience instead, as it was only a 200m walk from the cottage and only cost £9 for 24 hours. Much less hassle than trying to find on-street parking in the narrow back streets of Whitby.
The only downside was the noise from a nearby nightclub which was very loud after midnight, but it was a beautiful stay and we would definitely come back! Thank you!!

Great location. Lovely little property too

The property was exceptionally clean with everything you could want for a small, quirky cottage. Nice decor and good quality furnishings. Compact but a very good use of the space available. Bedding and towels included. Note: Could do with a hook on the back of the bathroom door. Lovely shower. Pre-paid parking zone cards very handy. Short walk from property to the harbour, beaches, the abbey, jewellery/gift shops and decent restaurants (Trenchers, Magpie Cafe and Velveteen).
BUT...
1. Parking was quite some way away up a steep hill. The nearest zone never seemed to have any free spaces available.
2. The sea gulls and pigeons made a horrendous din ALL night long keeping us all awake!
3. The bar at the end of the alleyway played loud music into the early hours stopping us from sleeping! I travelled with younger family members. You could hear the hand drier at the club repeatedly too.
5. We had drunks hanging around immediately outside of our accommodation keeping us awake.
6. There are 2 houses very close to the property that are being renovated so from 8am on the dot there were builders shouting, sanding, power tools, hammering, radios and alot of swearing!
I acknowledge that these factors are outside of the control of the property owners but there should be mention of the club, building works etc in the property details in my opinion.
I did write twice to Host & Stay whilst staying at the property re: above complaints/concerns.

Lovely quaint cottage, close to everything with excellent parking (paid) very close by. Very clean, with everything you needed to hand
Friday and Saturday nights were exceptionally loud until 4am in the morning. The cottage is located very close to a club and pub, with what seemed to be outdoor speakers. I appreciate the nature of the location in terms of accessibility to everything but perhaps a warning about the location of the clubs and the volume and lateness of the music would have been helpful. The other days we were there it was fine, just the Fri and Saturday

On the surface the asthetics were good for the outside of the property and very cosy and bijou on the inside.
However this is a very noisy location beyond 11pm at night. Night club next door till 3am in the morning (ok for youngsters wanting to make the most of a night on the town), nothing will block the noise out when in bed prior to 3am.
Seem to be Spammed with many e mails that consistently remind of T's and C's of departure times etc even over the Easter weekend, Easter day etc before check in but seemed to be unresponsive to requests when issues arose. Asked for extended check out of 1Hr, no reply till after we left but house which was still not occupied 2-3 hours after we left, nor had it been cleaned. We were absolutely shattered due to the noise from the nightclub. We were told this feedback would be passed on to marketing team, but nothing more than that, no comment on the fact that the word "vibrant" in the description of location actually meant "disruptive"
£60 cleaning fee, why? It would take max an hour to top to bottom clean down as the place is so small.
Uncomfortable settees if more than 2 staying.
Vetting process prior to travel does not seem to be optimised for Android devices, therfore became very manual.

A very cute, cosy cottage - it was cold when we stayed so we really appreciated the living room stove to relax by. The rooms were really nicely decorated and everything was very clean. It is next door to some pubs so it was quite loud in the evenings, but we expected this - and minded less because it's in such a handy central location. The main downside for me was the excessive level of communication - we got so many emails and messages, including one about how to check out on our first morning (which sort of spoilt the vibe!) and the ID verification process was a pain.

lovely and clean modern comfy everything you could need
the heating. it was cold even though I did what the booklet said nothing seemed to happen. not ideal in December. Also the verification process seemed OTT, uploading a photo of myself and my drivers license seemed over the top and an invasion of privacy. Also the alleyway to the cottage is very dingy and dirty

There was no breakfast available
We couldn’t get the radiators to heat up, a bit hit and miss.

Everything!!!!! Location, quirkiness and everything we could ever need.
A suggestion really not a dislike, maybe a hand rail for the outdoor steps. I walk with a stick and it would have been a little helpful.

Great little cottage, quite small living space for 4 people but very clean and nicely decorated and in a good central location

A lovely well appointed cottage. Immaculately maintained and in an excellent position at the heart pf Whitby harbour. Close to bars restaurants and a great base to explore the local area. Excellent customer service from the hosts.

Lovely cottage, done out to a high standard. Great central location in Whitby, be aware though - really quite noisy very late at night due to nearby pubs.

Really lovely cottage, with everything we needed for the weekend. So central and easy to find, only thing that's tricky is the parking as it was peak summer season in Whitby. There is a free parking permit provided but it was a bit hard to find spaces. Beautiful and clean cottage though and a super short walk to the main shops/restaurants/bars in Whitby so we had a really great stay.

A beautiful, clean, well equipped, tiny place to stay right in the middle of Whitby.
Be aware the free parking is VERY far away and at the top of the hill. Probably worth budgeting the c.£10/day for the station parking across the road.

Thimble Cottage is perfectly located. Small downstairs but perfectly formed! Everything needed was there. Good sized TV.
The bedrooms are beautiful with good quality linen. Perfect for a great night's sleep. The shower had amazing water pressure.
The whole cottage was spotless.
Thanks for a great stay.

We had a lovely stay at Thimble cottage, it was really clean, tidy, had everything you would need when away from home. Really close to the harbour so easy to get around and not far to walk for shops, bars, cafes etc.
We did struggle to find it initially even though we used the sat nav, as you come to the mini island by the harbour it is up an alley on your left immediately before the public toilets (coop and train station opp) we parked in harbour car park and just walked across with our luggage until we got our bearings.

Thimble cottage is a beautiful little cottage in a great location. Soon as you walk out onto the street there are many restaurants and shops and the harbour is just over the way. Although it took a while for us to find it because we parked 8 minutes away in a W zone and had to walk to the cottage the sat nav was confusing I’ve never been so happy to see a red door when we arrived! The cottage was very clean, had lots of useful compliance’s and had a lovely homely feel. Not to mention the beds, pillows and duvets were so comfortable could have stayed in there all day! Would love to visit thimble cottage again in the future.

Compact, central, clean and quiet! A great place for a getaway. It might be tight with 4 people staying, but for a little bolt-hole in the middle of Whitby it is superb!
