Location of cottage amazing. Gorgeous views of Whitby from windows and Abbey from front door. Space well configured. Simply and stylishly decorated and very comfortable. Would love to stay again but some technical issues need addressing. Some things mentioned in previous guest reviews still not addressed - stiff door lock (resolved by oiling); first floor ensuite shower difficult to work; 2nd floor bathroom windows at floor level have no blinds but overlook parking area; sink in first floor toilet wasn't draining as plug stuck down; no oven gloves etc. Also the outdoor wheelie bin seemed to have vanished but hopefully Host and Stay will resolve this. Also have concerns that the front door is the only way out with no internal mechanism (like a sneck) to let yourself out other than the key. Could be fabulous with tweaks so still gave 4 stars.

Many minor missing expected items ..and a very stiff hard to enter door.
No kitchen roll but a holder.
Basin and soap in toilet but no hand towel and plug was jammed in so water couldn’t be drained.
There were 2 bath towels but only 1 hand towel in downstairs bathroom.
Very cold and draughty ( high winds) as temperature seemed to max out eventually at 20.
Minor issues mounting up.
Parking place confusing as there we’re already 2 cars parked in designated area
My wife 80 couldn’t use the shower over the bath in upstairs bathroom as ours was not working.
There were no Instructions for appliances or tv which appeared to only have Samsung tv programmes.

The cottage is in a really lovely location in the grounds of Whitby Abbey, the views from the cottage are great and it’s very close to the start of a stunning coastal walk. It’s looks like the pictures but would really benefit from a good, deep, clean. It was dusty, cobwebs, oven unclean, windows unclean, sofa stained and cushions torn. I messaged the host when we arrived to report the issues but never got a response. I assume the messages we did get were automated. Good e-guide provided and a helpful video on how to access the property as that is not obvious. The location probably / possibly justified the price but such a shame it wasn’t in a better condition - that should be an easy fix.

The position was fantastic. Superb views.
Arrived to not having the house cleaned. All beds slept in, dirty towels on the bathroom floors, kitchen dirty & smelly from previous people.
I've waited a while to do this review as I'm waiting to get my money back for 1 night but I'm still waiting!! No-one responds until you chase.
Very disappointed. Our family were coming the following night and did not have our experience as the house was cleaned the morning after we got there.
No oven glove
Not enough chairs to sit around the table. Booking for 6 only had chairs for 4 people??

A beautiful proprty with stunning views. It was very clean on arrival and the beds were very comfortable. It was only a short distance from all the main attractions, not least the abbey which was literally on our doorstep.I think it was good value and would recommend it.
We were not able to park in the allotted car parking space as the car park was full throughout our stay so ended up parking in front of the property which I felt a bit stressed about. This was not helped as we departed, when, we assume, the cleaner, who had arrived early blocked us in initially and then was quite challenging with us about where we had had to park. We left feeling a bit upset.
An oven glove in the kitchen might be a good safety feature.

Perfect little set up the property was lovely and all the facilities you could want. Views were amazing and more fun and worth the price paid!
Could do with a deep clean for example around the toilet bowel, around the sink plug, alot of dust dead flies etc around the ledges in the living room. However Bedrooms were spotless

As soon as we entered the living room we were all blown away by the stunning views of the town below. We stepped up in to the kitchen where the amazing views of the town and sea continued to mesmerise us.
The house was spotlessly clean and well equipped. The kitchen was a great place to dine and we enjoyed relaxing on the huge comfy sofa. The location right by the abbey was amazing because it was so peaceful and quiet. You have to be organised in terms of provisions as you can't just pop to the local shop but this was a small price to pay to stay in such an amazing property.
We found the lack of blinds in the upstairs bathroom way too exposing so we propped pillows against the windows for privacy. The bottom of the cafetiere was missing. Other than that faultless!

Not happy about important items missing in kitchen:-
NO cafetière as it was broken, only the top in a cupboard.
NO pods only the coffee pod machine
NO blinds or curtains in upstairs bathroom /toilet over the 2 floor level windows overlooking front of accommodation and carpark.
DANGEROUS projecting bedbase sticking out over wrongly shaped matress. It was easily walked into so gouged my shin VERY BADLY which is still not healed 2 weeks later.
Communications with host and stay received exactly the same 2 stock replies no matter how many times commented.
NO full compliment of toiletries in all bathrooms and sinks.

Fantastic accommodation with amazing views of Whitby and the Abbey when you leave the property.
The only issue we had was finding the place. The instructions send you to the Abbey car park and then stop. Written instructions should be provided from there as you have to go through a small arch through the National heritage site.

Lovely building in a great location, let down by cleanliness, fridge and freezer had remnants of food in, there were coffee rings on bedside tables in all rooms that clearly hadnt been wiped.

The cottage is in a beautiful location with wonderful views of Whitby and although it is a little difficult to find at first it is worth the effort. It is well equipped generally although the oven does not work well and also a pair of oven gloves and properly working can opener would be good. The decor is nice but could do with a redecorate at the end of the season in certain areas. It could also do with skylight windows blinds in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Also the shower in the downstairs bedroom is a little hard to get to work sometimes. The blinds and the shower were mentioned on day one of our 3 night stay and were told someone would have a look but it seems like nobody came.
Overall we did thoroughly enjoy our stay there and despite pointing out some minor flaws, we would recommend a stay here. It seems that the cleaning team are doing a great job while the maintenance team needs to try harder .

Wow, what a beautiful place to stay.
The house is set in the Abbey grounds with a perfect view of Whitby from EVERY window.
The house has been done to a very high standard & the pictures represent the house well.
We were a group of 3 but 6 people would fit in the house comfortably.
The beds are extremely comfy.
There are a few minor things that need addressing in this house to make it worth top dollar (Shared with the host) but it didn't stop us thoroughly enjoying our stay & we plan to return & have already told others how beautiful it is.
Thank you.

You couldn't ask for a better views of Whitby, and the property is very comfortable.
If you have dogs, it's worth noting that there isn't a closed off garden area, but there is plenty of green space by the large car park.
We also found that 3 medium cars could fit on the drive comfortably without taking up more than the allocated space.
Highly recommend the brewery which is a stones throw!

Although the precise location was hard to find, we were amazed to see how close to the Abbey we were, and it was ideally situated for the Trek event we were doing. The location and the style of the property exceeded our expectations. There were a few areas of maintenance probably needed but nothing that spoiled our stay. The kitchen was well-equipped and clean, and the bathrooms were clean and had all we needed. Bedrooms were well-presented. There were four of us staying (adults) and the accommodation was perfect for that number. Easy walk down to town where there was plenty to do and some good restaurants. Lots of steps back up, but good for us!

Amazing location with a view over the Abbey ruins on one side and the Harbour and Sea on the other. Quite stunning. Beautifully designed modern interior, although in need of a bit of TLC this should not deter anyone wanting a peaceful location just minutes from the hustle and bustle of Whitby. There was a small “area” of garden adjoining the neighbours larger lawn which I don’t remember seeing on the description but was a welcome discovery for the 6am dog let outs! The house had everything we needed with the bonus of great views!

Wonderful location and great character property. The views were spectacular of both the Abbey and Whitby town.
There was no information about any appliances, what to do with rubbish, or anything at all. There was also a horrible smell coming from the kitchen sink whenever used despite pouring boiling water down the drain.
Katie
on Airbnb1 year ago
Lovely location very close to the town the 199 steps are not as bad as expected although better going down than back up. Check in smooth , make sure to follow the exact location pin given to you closer to the time as this sends you to the property could be difficult to locate otherwise. Modern inside, quite a few steps inside so if mobility problems could be difficult. Property needs a little tlc in terms of maintenance inside. During our stay it rained quite heavy which we think caused a leak on the ground floor ceiling (looks like a crack had been patched up previously) and the tap in the kitchen area was dripping although it was turned off. Raised issues with host and stay-quick response back and someone came to have a look. Dog friendly although would have liked a closed off yard area for dog to run freely. Check out smooth although would have been nice to check out later than 10am and allow check in a little earlier than 4pm.All in all had everything needed for our short stay.

Ideally located right next to Whitby abbey and only a couple of minutes from the brewery. It really is a beautiful location to look over the town. If you are looking for somewhere that is away from the centre for peace and quiet then this place is perfect. Its less than a 5 minute walk down the 199 steps into town. Clean, cosy and fantastic views and on a clear evening you can watch the sunset over the bay, what more could you need. The rooms are spacious, beds are comfy and the living room and kitchen area are well kitted out for a group stay. Highly recommend and would definitely stay again.

We could not have been happier with the property and its location. Unfortunately on entering the property there was a noticeable smell of damp. It was mostly coming from inside a cupboard in the kitchen where the smell was strong. The smell of damp was also noticeable in the ensuite bathroom. Additionally the temperature in the lounge was uncomfortably cold as the main radiator was lukewarm at best on its highest setting. The radiator in the ensuite bathroom did not work at all and on a cold weekend it made using the bathroom a miserable experience. Having spent over £800 for a 3 night stay I did not expect to have to wrap up warm inside the property and suffer the smell of damp. Sort the damp and heating out and this is a perfect airbnb property !

The location is fantastic, amazing scenery and views out of every window. The accommodation is a home away from home, really comfortable, clean and has everything you need. The beds are perfect and really comfy - not too soft & not too hard. There was nothing to fault at all. We will definitely be back here in the not too distant future! The communication was great and all info we needed was sent over to us beforehand. No problems getting in to the accommodation and parking right to the front is a real bonus.

We enjoyed our stay- great location, great views, nice views but here are a few observations from the stay.
1/ it was top dollar in terms of price
2/ under one of the upstairs beds was a Rocky chocolate biscuit- I don’t know how long that had been there.
3/ shower in the en-suite was very difficult to turn off and on
4/ Xpelair in the en-suite didn’t appear to work hence
5/ en -suite bathroom radiator again didn’t appear to work
6/ mould in the downstairs bedroom had to be removed by the window on the right hand side. This I believe is due to xpelair not working & resulting in mould in the bedroom
windows
7/glasses in the kitchen had to be re-washed as they were dirty.

Had a great stay. This was the second time we have stayed at this Airbnb and we love it.
Only down side was, the coffee poss for the coffee machine weren't the right pods for the machine itself, and there was no milk in the fridge on arrival, which there was on our first stay. Very minor issues on the whole.

We booked a two night stay at this property at the beginning of January 2023. The house was lovely, nicely decorated, very clean and spacious. The location was great, we were practically in the grounds of the abbey and the views of Whitby were amazing. We had zero complaints about the inside of the property.
I did have a fall on the pathway leading to the door of the property as a large stone bollard was placed across the pathway and as there was no outside lighting and the bollard was not highlighted in anyway the fell over it in the dark and suffered some nasty cuts and grazes, it was a shame is it happened within two hours of checking in so put a slight dampener on the break! So just be careful of that bollard if you stay.
We were really keen to re-book this place and we even had a few friends that were interested after we showed them the pictures however we won’t book this place again due to the after contact with Home Stay who are the company that look after the property.
I left a couple of things behind at the house and it took 4 emails and 2 phone calls over a period of two weeks to finally be told they didn’t have my items. Two items were left in the washing machine by mistake and they have claimed that nothing was handed in. I know full well that they were left so to tell me that house-keeping didn’t find anything was a blatant lie as well as being fobbed off for two weeks. The items weren’t super expensive but did cost me £50.00 to replace, as one item was a equa-fleece dog all in one suit and a pair of bamboo socks. It was just so disappointing that they clearly have some very dishonest staff who would happily help themselves to guests property, whether that was keeping it themselves or disposing of it because they couldn’t be bothered to save it for me.
I also sent through the pictures of my injuries after the fall and I just received a ‘sorry about that and the ‘bollard was put there by the neighbour so not really our problem’ type of response - despite the bollard being on the pathway leading to the door of the property.
Anyway, all I would say is, the house is lovely you will not be disappointed but just be very aware of the stone bollard and do not accidentally leave any items behind as you will not see them again.

A beautiful cottage with stunning views of Whitby and the Abbey from the property. A lovely cottage, very well styled and plenty of space for a family of 5 and a dog.

This cottage and location is perfect. The view from the bedrooms of the bay are really something. The house is modern, and cosy. Bedrooms are modern. Bathrooms were nice and new and every window in the house had something amazing to see when you looked out. Lounge sofa was very comfy and cosy and we loved our evenings in there.
2 minutes from Whitby centre. Hope you like steps!
A few little details missed on check in. The house smelt very strongly of the previous residents dinner, and dried contact lenses left on bedside table. There was incense in one of the kitchen drawers so we lit that and it soon sorted the curry smell.
Would recommend. Considering booking again for next year!

The location is absolutely fantastic. The accomodation has large bed- and bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. The property is well maintained and a blown fuse was fast and satisfactory replaced. Well done!
Just a few minor things. It's rather a puzzle how to get to the property with ones car but once you realize you actually have to go through the abbey grounds, the property can easily be reached. The outside light by the front door wasn't functioning (and we failed to report it) and opening the keysafe was at times a kind of lottery (will it open or will it not open?). Other than that we missed a coat rack in the hall, and hooks to hang coats/clothing from in the bed- and bathrooms. The property was advertised as having board games, puzzles and books available on the premises but unfortunately none were present.

Absolutely loved our stay at Caedmon House! Check in was a breeze as you just retrieve the key from the lock box. The property is beautiful. Lovely period property but the interior is done to a high standard. The kitchen has everything you need and more, including a nespresso machine and washing machine. There is also tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and some laundry and dishwasher tablets provided, which is good as we forgot these!! We had a tiny issue where one of the smoke alarms was beeping, but they sent someone round to sort this the same day no stress. My only feedback is would be to have a smaller lamp in the lounge so it’s not as bright when you’re trying to relax and also the property needs hooks!! Coat hooks in the entrance and hooks in the bathroom are needed as there wasn’t really anywhere for us to dry our towels. Also the drying rack provided was broken so this needs replacing. But overall an amazing stay in a fantastic location. The views are worth the price alone!!!

Beautiful place, clean, spacious and well appointed. The 199 are literally 1min walk from the front door.
One thing to note is parking was difficult to find on the first day and could be addressed in the itinerary. We looked for ages at the right way to get in. You have to drive THROUGH Whitby abbey to get to the house. There is a road left hand of the English Heritage ticket office. We hesitated for ages as it feels like you're driving through a monument but that is the way in.

Everything! Nothing about this property could i fault, spacious, beautifully decorated, amazing location and views, brilliant amenities even milk and Nespresso machine with pods provided 😀
Check out time 10am especially on a Sunday. I think an extra hr would have been so much less stressful especially as a family with 3 teenagers!

We had a fantastic stay at Caedmon House. The property and location are absolutely incredible. The house was furnished to a really high standard and we felt like we really were in a luxury home. The views are stunning.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

Great location , comfortable beds
Electrics required attention.which was quite alarmingly.Only certain sockets could be used without tripping all the electrics in the premises.Reported the issue, electrician arrived promptly next day who checked circuit board. Amp-age for the premises was wrong and had to request the owner for permission to change amp-age over. It was imperative that the electrics were repaired as my daughter and our five month old granddaughter arrived the following day. Access to the kitchen and electric socket was important as my granddaughter required feeding over night and I was concerned that the lighting in the property may trip over night whilst my daughter was going down stairs. My daughter preferred the upper floor bedroom as it was quieter away from the family area for our granddaughter to sleep.
Not enough cutlery, only three forks, not enough glassware, no glasses fir juice or water. Did request further glasses and they arrived two days later, however in fairness I tried to purchase glassware locally at five shops and supermarkets but no glasses were available. Nevertheless , things should be checked before hand really before we arrived and if things had been stolen or broken they should have been replaced or message sent to me to advised .

The property itself was stunning, furnished really nicely and the views were unbeatable.
Location wise, it could not be better (assuming you can manage steps) with Whitby town centre being less than 5 minutes away.
The Whitby Brewery is a very short walk away which was a bonus serving great beer and fresh pizza.
The driveway was suitable for 2 cars and provided a safe secure place to park the car.
Dog friendly was a bonus, our dog loved it. There is no garden though, just a small front yard which is not secure so worth noting if you are taking your dog.
There were a couple of things that caused us slight issues, with blown bulbs and an iron that kept tripping the electrics.
But all in all I would recommend and would consider staying again.

Apart from the stunning location, the interior being amazing they have thought of everything with this property, to list a few , milk in the fridge , washing up liquid/dishwasher tablets , cooking oil, tea, coffee etc . Never expected this !
There is nothing that I didn’t like but for the purpose of putting something in this box the small outside area needs a little TLC. This did not however alter the fact we had an amazing time in the lovely house .

This is a really great place - so much better than it even looks on the website. The location is amazing - incredible views over the harbour and of the abbey (which is practically next door). Great property, comfortable, and with everything we needed.

excellent style and great location
the bedroom lights didn’t work properly and flickered just a change of bulb needed in the downstairs bedroom.

This is an absolute killer location ( pun intended ). Stunning views over Whitby and so cool to be in the abbey grounds.
The apartment is well presented and very clean. Very private. Good set up of one ensuite and two rooms sharing. Would work well for a family. Was great for myself and my two brothers.
We loved just jumping straight on the Cleveland way and hiking along the coastal path. We actually enjoyed the daily steps but obviously you can also drive down easily in to the town if walking an issue.
Would always look to stay here for future trips!

We had a great time at the house, which was clean and tastefully presented. The views in all directions are fantastic, and walking down the 199 steps into town was really nice. It also helped to be away from the noise of the town on a Saturday night (we were staying with young children). Highly recommend!

What a lovely place to stay! The views were fantastic and we all enjoyed looking out of the windows and on the animals in the grass below and the views of Whitby. The house itself is decorated in a modern style and was lovely and clean. The grounds in which it is, makes the house even more special and we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Whitby. Communication with the hosts was fantastic and questions were answered quickly. We’ve had a wonderful family trip!

If you are a fan of Whitby, as I am, then this is the perfect place to stay. Views are amazing from all rooms and the abbey is next door. It's a 5 minute stroll down the steps into town. Beds are comfortable, and bedrooms are spacious. The bathrooms are modern and you have hot water on demand. Plenty of entertainment options from the smart tv, which is a good size, with a good picture. Kitchen has all the amenities you will need for your stay. We had a great few days and I hope to return again.

We had a lovely stay, the property is in an amazing location and there are gorgeous views of the town and harbour from every window. The property is decorated and furnished to a high standard and we found it very comfortable. The 199 steps to the Abbey may be an issue for the less mobile but we enjoyed the challenge, the Whitby Brewery was very close and was an added bonus. We had to contact the Host & Stay team when we had a slight maintenance issue and they were really helpful and sent someone out the next morning.
We did find cooking a main meal quite difficult as there was no large pans and quite a few pieces of the crockery and cutlery were dirty and needed cleaning before we could use them. Overall it was a minor inconvenience and did not affect our holiday, we would definitely stay again.

Wonderful cottage with fabulous views. Very clean, with everything that you could wish for. Quality fixtures and fittings. Really loved our stay here. Private parking is a bonus in Whitby! Feels very special to be so close to the Abbey.

Initial impression of the property was very good. It had everything we expected from the description on booking.com. Location, for us, was excellent, fantastic views across the river to Whitby town and lovely views out to sea. Walking back from town may be difficult for some as there are 199 steps to climb up to the area around the Abbey!
The attitude of HostandStay regarding a legitimate complaint about the main shower not working was appalling. We are a family of four (two adult daughters) and none of us were able to operate the main shower. We had a 2 night stay and on the first day emailed them to advise of the problem. Initially we were unable to operate the en-suite shower, but eventually I was able to switch it on, although it was exteremly difficult. Their stance all along has been that the showers were working and just "a bit stiff". That was absolutely not the case and as one of the major reasons for choosing this property was it had 2 showers (with 3 females in the group), we considered a partial refund was a legitimate outcome. All they would do was offer a 20% discount off another break with them. By continuing with their mantra of "they were working properly and just a bit stiff", they were in effect making me out to be a liar! There are many other companys on booking.com, choose one of them!

Firstly, what a location! You arrive wondering how lucky you are to be neighbours with the famous Whitby Abbey!! The cottage is newly renovated, modern but still with so much character & oh so cozy!! The carpets were lush!! Each bedroom well thought of with everything you need for a good nights sleep. Linen, pillows and beds were really comfortable & warm. Loved the walk in shower & plenty of hot water for a bath! Kitchen well equip & the views from every living space is just pure bliss. The horses grazing & galloping in the field overlooking the harbour was my favourite part of the morning with a cuppa coffee sitting in the window sill. Smart TV set up with Sky, Netflix etc a real treat especially with some very cold & wet nights. Ample parking for 2 vehicles. We have stayed in many AirBnBs and I can honestly say, this is definitely one of our favourite. We look forward to returning to Caedmon House next year!

This was one of the best places I’ve stayed. The accommodation was superb, with its modern, apartment living feel. The bedrooms were spacious, as was the shower! Private parking next to the property made life very easy. The hill top location near the abbey, with views of Whitby from every window, was simply amazing. We also all enjoyed the friendly local brewery and cliff top walks just a five minute walk away. Sian at Guest Relations was also really helpful. Can’t recommend this cottage enough!

We’ve had a lovely stay at Caedmon House. Great location next to the Abbey, but please be mindful of the 199 steps down to the town. The house has a modern interior with white crisp bed linen and comfortable beds. The fantastic views from the kitchen and lounge windows looks out over Whitby Harbour and the Sea.
We had a fantastic meal at the michelin star fish restaurant ‘Star in the Harbour’ and award winning fish & chip restaurant ‘Trenchers’, both are worth a visit.
I would definitely recommend Caedmon House to anyone looking for a stylish modern place in a great location.

What an amazing place to stay! The house was even more beautiful inside all amenities within! The most fantastic views from all windows!! Being in the abbey grounds was such a privilege. Absolutely perfect spot from which to explore Whitby, easy access both driving and walking! We were given very accurate directions to find the property and a video too which was very helpful and thought ful!
Information booklet inside told you all about the area, and hosts easy to get in touch with!
Absolutely fantastic stay will definately be back!!
